GA4 Server Events is the optional advanced layer of the Google Analytics addon. In the addon settings, open the "Advanced — GA4 Server Events" section, turn it on, and enter your GA4 Measurement ID (like G-XXXXXXXXXX) and an API secret created in your GA4 data stream's Measurement Protocol settings. The API secret is stored encrypted and you can leave the field blank later to keep the existing one. Choose which events to forward — Sent, Click, Unsubscribe, Bounce — using the checkboxes; Open is separate and off by default because Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates opens, with an optional "skip bot opens" filter. Delivery can be real-time or queued. A "Test connection" button sends a validation event to Google's debug endpoint and reports back whether your credentials work. A separate "Debug mode" toggle tags live events so you can watch them arrive in real time under GA4 → Admin → DebugView while testing — turn it off afterwards, since debug traffic is excluded from standard reports. Because emails have no browser cookie, the addon generates a stable, anonymous identifier per recipient so a contact's events group together in GA4; no email addresses or personal data are ever sent. The events appear in GA4 as custom events (email_sent, email_click, etc.) which you can build into explorations and reports. An event log in the addon shows delivery status, and failed events are retried automatically.
